The Day We Realized Our Water Was the Problem

Like many homeowners, I never gave much thought to the water coming into our home. If it looked clear and came out of the faucet when I turned the handle, I assumed everything was fine.

Over time, though, we started noticing little things. White buildup appeared around faucets and showerheads. Dishes came out of the dishwasher with spots. The shower glass always seemed dirty no matter how often it was cleaned. We even noticed dry skin and laundry that never felt quite as soft as it should.

At first, I chalked it up to normal wear and tear. Maybe our appliances were getting older. Maybe we needed different cleaning products. It never occurred to me that our water could be the source of the problem.

That changed when we scheduled a water test received our Water Report from PureWater Solutions.

When I finally sat down and read our water quality report, I noticed something that caught me off guard.

Chlorine. Fluoride. PFAS. Arsenic.

Every one of them listed as being "within acceptable limits."

That phrase stuck with me.

Acceptable doesn't necessarily mean ideal. It means the water meets current regulatory standards. But it also means contaminants can still be present.

PFAS—often called "forever chemicals"—were listed in trace amounts. So were disinfectant byproducts created during the water treatment process. Depending on where you live and your water source, other contaminants like arsenic, lead, nitrates, and industrial chemicals may also be present.

What surprised me most was learning that water treatment plants are primarily designed to make water safe from harmful bacteria and pathogens. They are not always designed to remove every chemical, pharmaceutical, or emerging contaminant that may be found in today's water supply.

The more I researched, the more questions I had.

How long have these substances been in our water?

What happens after years of exposure?

And if they're considered safe, why are so many families investing in additional filtration and water treatment systems?

Then I learned something that hit close to home: children can be more sensitive to environmental contaminants because of their smaller body size and developing systems. Suddenly, I wasn't just looking at a water report. I was thinking about every glass of water my family drinks each day.

That's when I realized I needed answers—not assumptions.

The results also revealed that our water contained elevated levels of hardness minerals and iron. While common throughout many areas of Central Virginia, these minerals can create a variety of issues throughout a home. Hard water can leave behind scale buildup inside pipes, water heaters, and appliances, while iron can cause staining on sinks, tubs, toilets, and fixtures.
